Music Journalism & Critical Reviews

Music journalism wasn’t something that I got into intentionally. Rather, it was a sort of side effect of being someone who enjoys writing and who had just moved across the world to a country that had a considerably broader music community than could be found in central Alberta. I was going to as many live shows as I could manage, so I started writing about them alongside my other travel blogs from moving to Finland.

Growing up in Canada meant that finding fellow metalheads was rare and live shows were even more so. At best, I was able to find a few friends who might listen to Iron Maiden with me, but in Finland, it was no trouble at all to meet others with similar tastes in music. I went to as many concerts as I could afford with my meager Au Pair’s salary in the first year and after a while, I started to include an occasional concert review amongst my general travel blogging. This ultimately led to an invitation to write for Musicalypse from their local owner and photographer…

Musicalypse ended up becoming a huge project for me, which began when I started writing there at the end of 2011 and evolved when I merged the site with Tuonela Magazine in 2021. You can read about Musicalypse’s history in the blog about our merge at Tuonela Magazine.

After the merge with Tuonela Magazine, I continued on as Editor and Head Journalist. In that time, I was able take a backseat in many parts of the site’s functionality and focus more on writing and editing. Luckily for the site’s Editor-in-Chief, the site is doing extremely well, but editing everything as the site continues to grow was getting to be pretty time-consuming, especially when I wanted to start pursuing other projects, like my Gathering of Geeks Podcast, which I was doing outside of Tuonela because I wanted to be able to invite all sorts of artists as guests without being limited to musicians.

After some time, it began to dawn on me that I had always planned to be a writer, not a journalist, and I began to wonder if there was a way that I could do both kinds of writing without functioning as a “media” anymore. I had started to write some video and board game reviews in my blog and, eventually, as I moved away from metal journalism and found myself endeared by the indie scene, I began to review everything that I felt deserved some words. Having spent a decade developing my critical thinking has made me quite hyper-aware of the quality of most things I consume, so I often find myself analyzing everything regardless of an active intention to do so. I figured I may as well stop limiting myself to just music reviews and, instead, use this as a space to explore critical reviews of all sorts of things.

Meanwhile, I somewhat accidentally took up interviewing artists again and, as a result, ended up coming up with a new concept for an interview series that focuses on the artists themselves, which you can learn about over at Off the Record Interviews!

You can still find me writing anniversary reviews, premieres, and the odd news article over at Tuonela Magazine these days, but over in my general review section, you can find reviews of everything I find interesting:

Music Reviews, Monthly New Song Watches, Game Reviews, TV & Film Reviews, and even Eco-Product Reviews!

Nowadays, I’m an Everything Journalist, or perhaps simply a Critical Reviewer. I like to experience everything that interests me in this life and share my thoughts as objectively as possible!

BandFit

BandFit is a video series started for Musicalypse during the period in time when I was coaching CrossFit. We only ever ended up doing three episodes, but we’ve often talked about revisiting the series in the future!
